What Are Cemented Carbide Dies?

Cemented carbide dies are high-performance tooling components made from tungsten carbide grains bonded with cobalt or nickel. They are widely used in wire drawing, bar drawing, tube drawing, cold heading, and extrusion processes where long die life and consistent dimensions are essential.

Cemented carbide dies offer hardness up to 90 HRA, high compressive strength, and exceptional abrasion resistance. Compared to tool steel dies, they last 20 to 50 times longer and maintain tighter tolerances over the production run.

The polished die bore provides excellent surface finish on drawn or extruded parts, reducing secondary finishing operations.

Common Die Types

We produce natural diamond dies, synthetic polycrystalline dies, and cemented carbide dies for various wire and rod sizes. Our carbide dies cover fine wire, medium wire, coarse wire, rod, and tube drawing applications.

Custom profile dies are available for special cross-sections such as profiles, rectangles, and shaped wires.

Grade Selection

Fine-grain grades are recommended for fine wire drawing where surface finish is critical. Medium-grain grades offer a balance of wear resistance and toughness for general drawing. Coarse-grain grades are used for heavy bar and tube drawing with high impact loads.

Cobalt content ranges from 6% to 15% depending on toughness requirements.

Manufacturing and Precision

Cemented carbide dies are produced through powder pressing, vacuum sintering, and precision machining. The die bore is finished by grinding, lapping, and polishing to achieve the required diameter and surface quality.

Dimensional tolerances of plus or minus 0.002 millimeters and surface roughness below Ra 0.1 are achievable.
