What Are Cemented Carbide Molds?

Cemented carbide molds are precision tooling components made from tungsten carbide powder bonded with cobalt or nickel. They are used for forming, drawing, extruding, and stamping metal parts where long mold life and high precision are required.

Why Use Cemented Carbide Molds?

Cemented carbide molds provide hardness from 86 to 92 HRA, excellent compressive strength, and outstanding wear resistance. They maintain polished surfaces and tight tolerances over millions of cycles, significantly reducing tooling costs per part.

The material is also resistant to thermal deformation and corrosion, making it suitable for processing stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and titanium.

Manufacturing Process

Cemented carbide molds are produced by powder pressing, vacuum sintering, and precision machining. Cavities are formed through EDM, grinding, and lapping, then polished to achieve the required surface finish.

Each component is inspected for dimensional accuracy, hardness, and surface quality before shipment.

Tolerances and Finish

Mold dimensions can be held to plus or minus 0.005 millimeters. Cavity surfaces can be polished to Ra 0.05 or better, ensuring excellent material flow and a smooth finish on molded parts.
