What Is a Tungsten Carbide Block?

Properties

Tungsten carbide blocks offer hardness from 86 to 90 HRA, high compressive strength, and excellent wear resistance. They maintain flatness and dimensional stability under heavy loads and repeated impact, making them ideal for die and wear applications.

Available Grades

Medium and coarse-grain grades are typically used for carbide blocks, balancing hardness with toughness for heavy-duty applications. Fine-grain grades are available for precision stamping and finishing operations.

Custom grades can be supplied according to customer specifications.

Manufacturing Process

Carbide blocks are produced by pressing carbide powder into large compacts, sintering in vacuum furnaces, and then precision grinding to final dimensions. Both top and bottom surfaces can be lapped or polished for flatness.

Tolerances and Surface Finish

Block dimensions can be held to plus or minus 0.02 millimeters. Flatness of 0.01 millimeters per 100 millimeters is achievable. Surfaces are supplied ground or lapped depending on application requirements.

Carbide blocks are used for stamping die sets, forming dies, wire drawing capstans, anvil blocks, wear plates, pressure shoes, and shear blades. They are essential in metal forming, mining, and heavy machinery industries.
