What Is a Tungsten Carbide Rod?

A tungsten carbide rod, also known as a carbide round bar, is a cylindrical cemented carbide product used for making cutting tools, punches, drills, nozzles, and wear components. Renyuan Mould supplies precision carbide rods in various diameters and lengths.

Carbide rods are the starting material for end mills, drills, reamers, boring bars, and custom tooling where hardness and wear resistance are critical.

Properties of Carbide Rods

Tungsten carbide rods offer hardness from 88 to 93 HRA, high transverse rupture strength, and excellent wear resistance. They maintain straightness and concentricity under high-speed cutting and heavy loads.

The material also provides good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion, making it suitable for high-speed machining applications.

Available Grades and Types

We offer fine-grain rods for finishing and high-speed machining, medium-grain rods for general milling and turning, and coarse-grain rods for heavy roughing and impact applications. Rods can be supplied with or without coolant holes.

Single-hole, double-hole, and three-hole coolant rods are available for internal cooling drills and end mills.

Precision and Tolerances

Carbide rods are precision ground to h6 or h7 tolerances. Diameter tolerances of plus or minus 0.003 millimeters and straightness of 0.01 millimeters per 100 millimeters are achievable. Surface finish of Ra 0.2 or better is standard.

Manufacturing Process

Carbide rods are produced by extrusion pressing of carbide powder, vacuum sintering, and centerless grinding to final dimensions. The extrusion process ensures uniform density and consistent grain structure along the rod length.

Applications

Carbide rods are used to manufacture end mills, drills, reamers, taps, punches, nozzles, precision shafts, and wear pins. They are essential in CNC machining, mold making, automotive manufacturing, and aerospace component production.
