Tungsten Carbide Stamping Tips for Aluminum

Introduction
Aluminum is a common stamping material, but it presents challenges including galling and built-up edge. Tungsten carbide dies can produce excellent results when properly specified.
Grade Selection
Fine-grain carbide grades with polished surfaces are preferred for aluminum stamping. Harder grades resist material pickup better. Avoid coarse grades that may cause scratching.
Die Clearance
Aluminum requires tighter clearances than steel. A clearance of 5 to 8 percent of material thickness typically produces clean cuts. Too much clearance causes burrs; too little causes rapid tool wear.
Surface Finish
Polished or coated die surfaces are essential for aluminum. Rough surfaces cause aluminum to weld to the die, resulting in scored parts. Mirror-polished carbide prevents this problem.
Lubrication
Effective lubrication reduces friction and prevents galling. Use appropriate stamping lubricants for aluminum. Proper application and consistent coverage improve part quality and die life.
Coating Options
DLC or TiN coatings can further reduce aluminum pickup. These coatings create a low-friction surface that aluminum does not adhere to, even under high pressure.
Conclusion
Carbide dies stamp aluminum effectively when the right grade, clearance, surface finish, and lubrication are used. Polished carbide is key to clean, defect-free aluminum stampings.
