YG6 vs YG8 Carbide: Which Grade Fits Your Application

Author:Renyuan Time:2026-10-14 10:27:57 Click:103

Introduction

YG6 and YG8 are two of the most common tungsten carbide grades. While they may seem similar, their cobalt content differences produce distinct mechanical properties that suit different applications.

Composition

YG6 contains approximately 6 percent cobalt, while YG8 contains approximately 8 percent cobalt. The remaining 94 or 92 percent is tungsten carbide. This small difference in binder content significantly affects performance.

Hardness Comparison

YG6 is harder, typically measuring 89 to 91 HRA. YG8 is slightly softer at 88 to 90 HRA. The higher cobalt content in YG8 reduces hardness but increases toughness.

Wear Resistance

YG6 offers better abrasive wear resistance due to its higher carbide content. It holds sharp edges longer and is preferred for finishing cuts and fine stamping.

Toughness

YG8 is tougher and more resistant to chipping and fracture. It handles impact loads and interrupted cuts better than YG6. For heavy stamping or roughing operations, YG8 is safer.

Application Guide

Choose YG6 for fine blanking, wire drawing, finishing tools, and precision stamping. Choose YG8 for general stamping, medium-duty forming, and applications where impact resistance matters.

Conclusion

The choice between YG6 and YG8 depends on the balance of wear resistance and toughness your application requires. When in doubt, start with YG8 for general use and switch to YG6 when wear life is the priority.
