Common Causes of Carbide Die Failure and How to Prevent Them

Introduction
Carbide dies are durable, but they can fail prematurely if not used correctly. Understanding common failure modes helps operators prevent costly downtime and extend tooling life.
Chipping and Edge Breakage
Chipping usually occurs when a too-hard grade is used for an impact-heavy application. Switching to a tougher grade with higher cobalt content often solves this problem. Proper die clearance also reduces edge loading.
Cracking
Cracks result from excessive clamping pressure, sharp internal corners, or thermal shock. Design dies with generous radii, avoid over-tightening mounting bolts, and ensure proper press alignment to prevent cracking.
Wear and Dimension Loss
Gradual wear is normal, but accelerated wear indicates wrong grade selection or insufficient lubrication. Harder grades with lower cobalt content improve wear life. Proper lubrication and coating also help.
Galling and Material Pickup
Galling happens when workpiece material sticks to the die surface. Polished die surfaces, proper coatings, and effective lubrication prevent material pickup and produce cleaner parts.
Prevention Strategy
Regular die inspection, proper press setup, correct grade selection, and disciplined maintenance are the keys to maximum die life. Keep records of die cycles and inspect edges before failure occurs.
Conclusion
Most carbide die failures are preventable with proper design, grade selection, and maintenance. Addressing failure causes early saves significant tooling costs and production downtime.
