Introduction
Carbide tools can be resharpened multiple times, extending their useful life significantly. Proper regrinding and recoating restore tool performance at a fraction of new tool cost.
When to Regrind
Regrind tools when the cutting edge shows wear or when surface finish deteriorates. Do not wait for catastrophic failure, as this can damage the tool body.
Regrinding Process
Use diamond grinding wheels with proper coolant. Remove only enough material to restore the edge geometry. Avoid overheating, which can damage the carbide substrate.
Recoating
After regrinding, old coating must be stripped before recoating. New PVD coatings restore the low-friction, heat-resistant properties. Recoating is cost-effective for expensive tools.
Edge Preparation
Light edge honing after regrinding strengthens the cutting edge. This prevents micro-chipping and extends tool life, especially in interrupted cuts.
Conclusion
Regrinding and recoating carbide tools dramatically reduce tooling costs. With proper techniques, tools can be resharpened many times while maintaining performance.
