Tungsten Carbide for Steel and Stainless Stamping

Introduction
Steel and stainless steel stamping is more demanding than non-ferrous stamping. Tungsten carbide dies handle the higher forces, abrasion, and galling that these materials present.
Material Challenges
High-strength steel and stainless steel generate high stamping forces and heat. They work-harden quickly and can cause rapid tool wear or galling. Carbide must be selected accordingly.
Grade Selection
Medium-grain grades with balanced toughness and wear resistance are preferred. YG11 or YG15 grades handle steel stamping. For thick or high-strength steel, tougher YG20 grades prevent chipping.
Die Clearance
Steel requires more clearance than non-ferrous metals. A clearance of 10 to 15 percent of material thickness is typical. Too little clearance causes rapid wear; too much causes burrs.
Surface Treatment
Coated carbide dies reduce galling when stamping stainless steel. TiN or TiCN coatings create a barrier that prevents material pickup and improves part surface finish.
Conclusion
Tungsten carbide is essential for steel and stainless steel stamping. Proper grade selection, clearance, and coating ensure long die life and quality stampings.
