What is the difference between carbide die and steel die?

Carbide die(tungsten carbide/cemented carbide die)and steel die(tool steel die)are two common tooling options for metal forming, stamping, cold heading and extrusion. They differ greatly in material composition, mechanical properties, service life, machining and applicable production scenarios.
Carbide die is sintered from tungsten carbide powder with cobalt binder. It features ultra-high hardness, excellent wear resistance and superior compressive strength. It can maintain stable dimensional accuracy over millions of production cycles, making it suitable for high-volume mass production. The downside is its relatively low impact toughness;carbide dies are prone to chipping or cracking under sudden heavy impact.Carbide tools require special grinding or EDM machining and usually cost more upfront.
Steel die is made of heat-treated tool steel such as D2,SKD11 and Cr12MoV.Tool steel has good toughness and is much less likely to crack under shock loads.Steel dies are easier to machine, polish and repair, with lower initial cost. However, its wear resistance is far inferior to carbide. When stamping hard metals or running large batches, steel dies wear quickly and need frequent regrinding and replacement.
In practical selection:carbide dies are preferred for long-run fastener cold heading, wire drawing and precision stamping.Steel dies are more suitable for small-batch production,low-load forming and applications with strong impact vibration. Many factories combine both solutions:using carbide inserts for wear-prone working areas and tool steel for die holders to balance cost and performance.
