Which grade of tungsten carbide is best for cold heading dies?

There is no single universal tungsten carbide grade that fits all cold heading die applications. The best cemented carbide grade depends on the workpiece material, impact load, forming pressure and target tool service life.Cold heading dies must balance wear resistance and toughness, because repeated impact may cause chipping while continuous friction wears the die surface.
YG8,YG11 and YG15 are the most widely used grades for cold heading dies.YG8 has low cobalt content, high hardness and excellent wear resistance. It works well for low-impact forming, small fasteners and fine tolerance production, but it is relatively brittle and not suitable for heavy impact conditions.YG11 is the most popular general-purpose grade. It balances wear resistance and impact toughness, ideal for standard bolts, screws and medium-load cold heading operations.YG15 contains higher cobalt binder, delivering superior toughness to resist cracking and chipping. It is recommended for heavy cold heading,large-size fasteners and forming hard metal materials.
Fine-grained carbide grades are selected for ultra-precision cold heading dies to maintain tight dimensional tolerance.Coarse-grained grades are adopted when high impact resistance is the primary requirement.Die manufacturers will analyze your working conditions and recommend the proper grade.Besides grade selection, precision machining and surface polishing also play key roles in extending the service life of tungsten carbide cold heading dies.
