Introduction
YG20 is a high-cobalt tungsten carbide grade specifically designed for applications involving heavy impact and compressive loads. It is widely used in cold heading, hot forging, and thick stamping operations.
Material Properties
YG20 contains approximately 20 percent cobalt, giving it high transverse rupture strength and impact toughness. While its hardness around 85 to 87 HRA is lower than other grades, it resists chipping and fracture under shock loading.
Cold Heading Applications
In cold heading, YG20 dies withstand repeated high-force impacts as wire is formed into bolts and rivets. The grade toughness prevents die fracture, while its hardness still provides good wear resistance.
Hot Forging
YG20 is used in hot forging dies where both heat and impact are present. The grade maintains its integrity under the extreme forces required to shape hot metal.
When to Use YG20
Choose YG20 when impact resistance and fracture toughness are more critical than maximum wear resistance. For fine blanking or thin sheet stamping, harder grades are more appropriate.
Conclusion
YG20 is the go-to carbide grade for cold heading, forging, and heavy impact applications. Its high cobalt content provides the toughness needed where other grades would fracture.
